Southword is a twice annual literary journal, publishing quality poems from established and emerging poets across the world.
Southword receives over 3000 poems in an open submission period.
Trainee Poetry Editors
Two appointments will be made.
Applications are invited from emerging poets in Cork City & County. As an emerging poet you will have at least four poetry periodical publication credits and not more than two full collections published. You will not have edited a poetry journal previously.
A successful applicant must commit to reading all poetry submissions to Southword in the current open submission period. They will make selections as if they were the poetry editor. Their selections will not be the poems actually published.
Successful applicants must commit to a meeting in late May or early June with Editor Patrick Cotter and Publications Officer James O’Leary to discuss editorial preferences and outcomes
The purpose of this exercise is twofold:
1) As a practising poet, a successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop awareness of the common mistakes associated with most unsuccessful submissions and to develop strategies to avoid making such mistakes in their own work.
2) Successful applicants will acquire experience in the editing process.
Applicants should submit by January 31st a letter of interest with a literary biographical note and a select bibliography of their own publications.
